As we have been explaining throughout the various publications of our study on private aviation in 2020, the aircraft category is a key element when analysing the behaviour of this mode of transport. It is therefore striking that, while overall departures by private aircraft from Spain decreased in 2020 compared to 2019, the figure for turboprop aircraft has actually increased by +5.1% in the annual total and represent almost 16% of the total number of flights operated from our country.

This may be explained by the importance of this category in ambulance and medical flights in general, and by the fact that they account for a large part of flights operated to transport organs for transplants.

The share of flights operated by category varies considerably between airports. For example, the aforementioned turboprops account for 51.58% of the total number of departures registered from Menorca, while they represent only 5.29% of departures from Madrid.

Light Jets are the most widely used category of aircraft in Spain, accounting for 26.04% of all departures. Palma de Mallorca leads departures in this category, accounting for 18.05% of all flights from Spain.

In line with worldwide data collected during 2020, superior categories and especially VIP Airliners (-61.4%) are the ones that recorded the sharpest and most pronounced drops.
