Under the slopes of the Sierra Nevada, lies Granada, provincial capital of southern Spain, in the autonomous community of Andalusia. It is famous for its great examples of medieval architecture dating from the Moorish occupation, in particular, the Alhambra. This sprawling hilltop fortress includes royal palaces, courtyards and reflecting pools of the Nasrid dynasty, and fountains and orchards in the gardens of the Generalife. The city has some of this country's greatest cultural heritage.
