Vitoria-Gasteiz is the administrative capital of the Basque Country, located in northern Spain. The city was built in the shape of an almond so that it could be used strategically in battles in the Middle Ages. In the medieval quarter stands the Gothic cathedral of Santa Maria, with sculptures on the façade and towering columns that rise to form towers. The 17th-century Plaza de la Virgen Blanca square houses a monument to the Battle of Vitoria. The church of San Miguel has a large Baroque altarpiece and a statue of the Virgen Blanca, patron saint of the city.
